Should feel lighter than other pennies and make a different sound when moved around with other coins.

MoreAs of 2012 no additional 1974 aluminum cents have been authenticated. It's very unlikely that any would turn up in change. Any that do exist are most likely from the group that were "temporarily" loaned to members of Congress for examination.

As the prior answer noted, an aluminum cent is lighter than a standard 1974 bronze cent or a modern zinc cent. The difference is significant; the aluminum coins weigh(ed) about 1 gram which is far less than the 2.5 gm weight of a zinc cent or 3.11 gm weight of a bronze coin.

Were their ever a 1976 d aluminum penny made as I have seen one with my own two eyes?

Most likely you have seen a fake. Someone probably electroplated an ordinary 1976 d penny with silver or aluminum. Check its weight. Aluminum is light, less than 1/3rd the density of copper. Compare its weight with a copper penny. If the "aluminum" penny is just as heavy, then it is a electroplated penny. If it is light, then it is a complete fake.

How can you tell if a penny is copper?

Before 1982, all US 1 cent coins were copper (except steel cents made in WW 2) and a very rare 1974 aluminum penny. After 1982, US 1 cent coins are copper plated zinc. What about 1982- they had both that year? Weigh your coin- if it weighs 3.11 grams, it is copper. If it is 2.5 grams, it is plated zinc.
