you more than likely just have a bad ac pump
The Escort uses a single disc, dry clutch with a metal marcel and its hub is cushioned with springs. The working surfaces are conventional friction material as found in most clutch plates of that type.
I don't know if Nissan is the same as Ford but on my Taurus you have to lift up on the clutch pedal with your foot until you hear it clicking; that's the clutch adjustment mechanism. Try that and see if it works. This guy means if you have a ratcheting adjustment type clutch. I had one on my 86' 5.0 mustang. There are 2 other possible problems... I had same problem so I changed clutch, no diference. found the plate the clutch pedal conects to had pulled away from bulkhead. rewelded to bulkhead and clutch was fine.

Got it! Repairman put a scanner on the engine and found the clutch fan wasn't disengaging and the thermostat was too cold. This, in addition to the old-style, single-wire O2 sensor being so slow, the truck was getting conflicting reports from the sensors. Installed a hotter thermostat, replaced the O2 sensor and replaced the clutch fan. We're rocking now!
