∙ 12y agoOn almost any vehicle, the MAF is located in the air intake between the air filter and the engine. On a '99 it's easy to spot by the wires and electrical connector plugged into the sensor, which is just past the filter.
Look for the wires, usually plugged into a hard plastic section of the rubber intake that houses the MAF. It's not uncommon to replace that housing with the sensor inside as a single unit, but I have installed one and reused the housing while just replacing the sensor itself.
My experience on 4runners is from later model years, but I imagine it's quite similar on a '96.

∙ 12y agoNot sure if the 97 has a cabin sensor or if this was what you were looking for. Yet the one for the engine is in the air flow meter at the air filter.

Mass air flow sensor is located in the intake pipe connecting the air filter box with the throttle body.
The IAT ( idle air temperature ) sensor is built in to the MAF ( mass air flow ) sensor.
