First, locate the oil filter from under the car. Then look for the knock sensor attached to the engine block higher than the oil filter. It's screwed into the engine block with a #12 metric bolt. It took my entire arm length to reach the sensor from beneath the car. Remove the bolt and there's enough wire to pull out and remove the wiring from the sensor. Be careful not to break the connector.

Knock sensorThe knock sensor for a 1996 Nissan Altima is located on the backside of the block above the oil filter. But before you go and change it out, run a tank of the best/hightest rated gas you can find and see if that fixes the problem. On my 1995 the Knock sensor is located under the plenum and intake manifold on top of the middle of the block.
It is located unter the intake manifold near the oil filter.
It is located on the back of the engine block just above the oil filter
If just the knock sensor need to be replaced. I would say no more than $150.00
it is right below on the intake, on the blocks backside.
The knock sensor is located below the intake manifold
The knock sensor is located below the intake manifold
It is located on the back (firewall) side of the engine block beneath the intake manifold. It's a real pain to get to.
