Look into the engine compartment. Look to the right side behind the air filter box. You should see 2 connectors that are either pushed into 2 rubber covers on the side wall. Or you will see them loose behind the box. One will have 2 wires and one will have three. The one with 2 wires is the T1 E1 connector the books talk about.

The fuel filter on an 87 4runner with a 22re is bolted to the block under the intake on the passenger side. It's a little difficult to get to, but it can be done without removing the fuel injection system.
I have an 86 4 runner and a 22re engine. The nuts and bolts on mine are 12 mm.

There should be a sticker in the engine compartment that shows the specific information for your vehicle. If you don't have one then it has a normal setting of 10 degrees BTDC at 800 RPM
On my 88 4Runner 22RE, the relay is located under the hood on the passenger side fender, just behind some sort of resister looking thing with cooling fins, a bit to the rear of the front tire, with a white plastic 4 wire plug.
