It is part of the airconditioner system and is located (on a 2001 Forester) under the dash on the front passenger side (below the glove compartment). It is located behind the glove box and can be accessed by removing several screws and two clips on the right side of the glove box. See the "related link" below for pictures of the removal and installation.
The 1999 Subaru Forester air filter is located in the engine compartment inside of the air box. There is also a cabin filter located behind the glove box.
Yes they do offer this, at least they did on my 2000. Check your owner's manual.
The stock air box in a Subaru Forester contains the air filter. To reveal the air filter remove all the screws mounting it to the engine. Proceed to open the air box and replace the air filter. Reinstall the air box to the car.
It is very simple. Remove the seven screws holding the glove box. Slide out the box and the filter is easily replaced.
My 2000 Forester has at least two air filters. One filters engine air and one filters cabin air. Look in your owners manual for location of either or drop another line here with a more specific request.
Yes, at the age of this vehicle you probably should.
Note that not all models have cabin air filtration. With that said, the manual says that the filter is located behind the glove box. This requires you to open the glove compartment, disconnect the damper (the little piston that allows the door to open slowly and not just fall open) and detach the door stops at the back of the compartment. This exposes the cover for the cabin filter, which can then be slid out and the filter cleaned or replaced.
