Generally the blower motor resistor is found close to the blower motor. It relies on the blower motor to keep it cool.
just behind the blower motor under the passanger side dash is a plug that is the risistor. two screws hold it in place. just remove the two screws and pull out. xterraparts.com has themm for about $19.

Xterraparts.com has pictures of the part and a diagram. In the diagram, the front arrow is pointing to the cabin not the front of the car. Follow the four blue and white wires from the blower motor to the blower motor resistor.
Check the fuse. Check the blower speed resistor. Check the blower speed control switch.
Its under the hood on the firewall on the passengers side.........

On my 2002 it is located on the air plenum just below the blower motor on the passenger side fire wall inside the engine compartment.
Front blower motor resistor is to left of blower motor assembley, attached on the top of a plastic duct piece that has clipws holding it together. Take out the glove compartment and you'll sse a connetcing piece of black plastic duct work between the blower motor and the center counsel . You have to buy the whole upper duct piece from Mazda parts around $100 tas the resistor is attached to it. . There are white connectors coming out of the duct going straight up. I had to have the dealer show me where it is. Looks fairly simple to put in.
