What are Civic institutions?
Civic institutions are any institution that exists separate from the State and the Market. In other words, a Civic Institution is one that is not engaged in governance or business. Civic institutions include, but are not limited to, academic institutions (universities, schools, etc.), community groups, churches, cultural groups, political parties, professional associations, and trade unions. In some instances the distinction between a Civic Institution and a Government or Market Institution can become blurred. This is often the case in countries run by a totalitarian system, and particularly effects state sponsored schools.
