Hydrogen Benefits ZED engines have been designed to burn hydrogen fuel, the most plentiful molecule in the universe, and first on the Periodic Table. It can be readily produced by numerous cost effective means, but primary through the electrolysis of water, the most plentiful substance on earth. The environmental benefit is significant because when ignited, hydrogen combines with oxygen in the air to produce environmentally benign water vapor, thereby eliminating combusted carbon as a source of pollution. In addition, the high cost of fuel oil is a significant detriment to the economy of an industrial country because all goods include a transportation fuel cost ranging from 10% to 90% of the final consumer price. Producing hydrogen from water at a fraction of the cost of fuel oil would decrease the price of all goods (through the elimination of high transportation cost) and provide a significant boost to the economy. Hydrogen fuel also provides additional political security to the free industrialized nations of the world as the purchase of fuel oil from politically unstable areas of the world is decreased or eliminated. Production of hydrogen from water would not be subject to cartel control of supply and pricing as with oil, so the cost of electrolosis produced hydrogen fuel is predicted to be stable, and calculated to be less than 1/10 the current cost of gasoline or diesel fuel per BTU of energy. As an environmental, health and economic solution, hydrogen fueled vehicles are currently being developed by numerous companies including General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Ford, BMW and Mercedes although none have been able to engineer an engine which can compete with the advanced, patented ZED design. Recognizing the inherent benefits of hydrogen fuel, governments and corporations have signed agreements in 2006 and 2007 to develop hydrogen fueling stations both in the European Union and North America. Hydrogen by Electrolosis Hydrogen electrolysis is the process of running an electrical current through water (H2O) and separating the hydrogen from the oxygen. Whereas Hydrogen production by electrolysis had met commercial resistance in the past new methods make real the dream of hydrogen cars running upon the hydrogen highways of the world.
Idaho National Labratory Researchers at the U. S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory have developed the Catalytic Decomposition of Water Method of electrolosis which provides a new route for producing hydrogen from water by using mixed proton-electron conducting membranes. Water is decomposed on the feed surface. The hydrogen is ionized and protons and electrons travel concurrently through the membrane. On the permeate side, they combine into hydrogen molecules. Alternately and equally efficient, Stuart Energy, uses circular electrolysis cells and an alkaline inorganic ion-exchange membrane to produce hydrogen from water. Proton Energy Systems, which has won contracts in California and across the nation have developed their own PEM hydrogen electrolysis technology called HOGEN. The HOGEN hydrogen generation product is an on-site, one-box, automated system that eliminates the physical delivery of hydrogen to a facility by allowing a company to generate its own hydrogen using electricity and pure water (such as at an old gasoline station location). Hydro-electrical power from dams, wind-energy and solar energy sources can all be fitted with hydrogen electrolysis units in order to produce enough hydrogen for your hydrogen cars to run on in the future.
