Follow the bottom hose to the thermostat housing on the front side of the engine.
The thermostat on a 1989 Nissan Sentra is on the front of the motor to the left. It is just below where the valve cover meets top of the manifold. The thermostat is enclosed in the radiator hose at that location.
Look for the thermostat housing on the back side of the block on the upper left-hand side.
Look for a removable housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose

The thermostat "is not" located off of the upper radiator hose behind the housing connected with two bolts.

It is on the firewall side of the motor and can be accessed on the passenger side of the car. I believe it is on the thermostat housing. There is a coolant line that connects to a fitting right next to the sensor in the housing.
