I recently purchased a 2001 mitsusbishi montero and through many problems and much research I've found that it calls for Diamond SP-ll /SP-lll. Also Castrol makes a transmission fluid called "Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle ATF" this fluid can also be used.
If a complete flush is done, the capacity is 11 quarts. If it is only drained from the plug, three quarts are needed. Use Mitsubishi transmission oil only.
Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. Follow the owner's manual instructions for checking the fluid level. Engine hot? Running in neutral? Then USING A SMALL FUNNEL ADD the fluid down the dipstick tube, SLOWLY until it is up to the proper mark. It will NOT take much fluid. DO NOT OVERFILL.
