If you just open the drain ,it will take 3 qts of Dextron 3 to replace it. the whole transmission capacity is 7 Qt. The 4 QT is for the torque converter. if your aim is to flush the old stuff out,plan on 12 Qts. make sure to check the fluid level with the dipstick after you add fluid. if the trans was cool when you removed the old and added new, start the car and check the level, it should be at the upper notch of the "cool" indicator on the stick. if the trans was hot the level should be between "cool" and "hot"
