Obviously, switching from the Drive gear to the N gear while driving wears down the transmission, but it DOES give you higher gas mileage. Just how much the transmission is worn down due to this depends on how much you switch between the gears. I wouldn't recommend it as it does shorten the life of your transmission, and the transmission costs more than the money you'd save on gas.

The GMC Sonoma 2.2 litre manual transmission hold 12 quarts of transmission gear oil. Keep in mind there is a big difference between gear oil and automatic transmission fluid.
4.12 qts _oil pan capacity is 3.8 qts and oil filter capacity is 0.32 qts according to my owners manual
about 13 quarts.
The price varies, but it should in the range of $1000-3000 + transmission.
