How to trouble shoot fuel pump on 98 Chevy Venture
This is not a safe way to test a fuel pump. Simply test the pump with a fuel pressure gauge while it is still in the vehicle. If you go to all the trouble of dropping the fuel tank and removing the pump then just replace it.
Have someone turn on the ignition without starting the engine while you listen at the fuel filler with the door open and the fuel cap off. You should hear the pump run for a few seconds. If you do then you know the pump is running but it may not be pumping any fuel and may need replacing or the fuel filter is clogged. Replace the fuel filter and if the problem persists then you will have to have a fuel pressure test run on the pump. If you hear nothing then the fuse is blown, fuel pump relay is defective or the pump needs replacing.
A fuel pressure test done at the fuel rail will verify the condition of the fuel pump. Before going to that much trouble check the fuse, and fuel pump relay. If either one is defective the fuel pump will not function.
Check for blown fuse. Under back seat, right side fuse block. Or pull carpet from trunk, remove fuel pump cover. And check harness with test light. If power and ground to pump. Replace pump. If no power to pump, go back to back seat, and trouble shoot fuel pump relay. Left side fuse block.
code po171
The fuel pump relay is in the fuel pump itself, Therefore when your relay goes bad or you get a 5-4 trouble code you must replace the fuel pump.
to check the pump ,you need to remove the out fuel line from the pump. this is the line that goes from the pump to the injectors or carburettor, etc then crank engine. if pump is good, fuel will shoot out of the pump.then just replace fuel line
Yes
Disconnect the fuel line that goes from the pump to the fuel filter and check for flow - if you get fuel there, the pump is ok. If not, the pump needs to be replaced. If ok, re-connect the fuel line and disconnect the line that comes out of the filter (filter to engine) and checlk for flow. If little or no flow, replace the filter. If filter is ok, reconnect the fuel line and look for an obstruction further up the line. You could also trouble-shoot in reverse by disconnecting the fuel line where it connects at the engine and checking for flow there. Then just work backwards from there.
