on the cam there is a little dot that is machined in the cam gear. make sure that it is at top dead center( remember that the motor sits at a slight angle so it wont look like the very top by looking strait at it. you will have to take the crank pully off to see the mark on the crank gear. the mark is an indentation on the back of the pully. line that up with the little arrow next to the gear. after that is set put the belt on making sure that you don't move the gears. put your pully back on and use a timing light to set the timing at two degrees top side by looking at the marks on the timing belt cover next to the crank pully.
to hook up an alternator with out ac just don't put the belt that hooks up to the crank pully back on.,.,
you have to take it to a shop or get under it and put it on pully by pully!
there are 3 rivets, they have to be drilled out then there are special rivets you have to put back in.
I have had the same problem with my Montero Sport. I have had it since new in 2002. The answer is after installing a new battery to sit in the parking lot and crank it about 5 times. It will stop doing this after about 5 times. Stinks if you are driving and stopping.
take the timing cover off the belt there should be a gear below the camshaft pully its a tensioner use a peice of chalk and mark the very top of the cam pully and the very bottom of the crank pully do your best not to turn them loosen the tensioner pully the belt will loosen up take it off put the new one on if you turned the pully put it back slowly tighten the belt when its tight if the pully turned when tightening pull the slack out by hand then tighten it both chalk marks should be lined up if they are start the car always unplug the battery first and don't rotate the pullys more than a few inches if nessacery when the belt is off you could cause damage to the valves
on your oil pan, close to the crankshaft pully. mine had one bolt (1996) Dont worry, no oil will come out. These ussually get dirty and not work well. I would suggest removing and cleaning up and make sure the magnet is clean, and reinstall before buying a new one. sorry but this is wrong you do not have a crank positioning sensor on a 93 geo metro and if they do i have not found one on mine yet 96 was the first year for them to put a crank sensor on the oil pan
on the crank, there is a key and keyway it should be strait up. this will get you close. and the cam pully has mark's on either side and a marking that says up where your valve cover connects to the head, put the up up and the marks each lined up with where the valve cover connects one on each side. then fine tune the timing by puting the mark on the crank pully on the mark on the timimg belt cover. you are now timed!
remove the bolt on the pully or use a pully remover depending on the style of pully and put new one on.
Just looking at it it seems like from the top...but I find it much easier from the passenger side wheel weld. Remove the wheel, then front half of the splash guard. Put belt over alternator, then A/C, then crank pully. Have friend put finger on alt. so the belt don't come off. Then push belt almost on the spring tensioner pully, put 13mm (or 15mm wrench cant remember which)on spring pully bolt, pull down on wrench and slip the belt over the spring pully, release the wrench. Takes 30 seconds after you get the wheel off and splah shield removed. But it can be done from the top,it just ain't easy.
You're gonna have to get a book from an auto store. Raise the car on jackstands, put a jack under the oil pan (be sure to put a block of wood on it), raise the engine a little, and take off the passenger side motor mount. Take all the bolts out of the timing belt cover, remove it and your crank pully. There's no tensioner on the belt itself, so to put a new one on you're gonna have to put it on slowly, working it on all the way around. Make sure to put it in time first, #4 cylinder on TDC, and align the marks on the crank and cam pully like it says in the book. Installation is the reverse of removal.
1996 pontiac sunfire 2.2 crank was moved but cam was not could the timing get out 180 degrees before i put it back together
