2) put new stereo in where old one was
If you are looking for detail, there are no generic instructions. Anything more than the instructions above requires information as to what is in the car now and what you intend to put in. When you have that information, go to www.crutchfield.com. I use them for nearly every change of equipment that I do and they will help with whatever you need. Not always the cheapest, but they are the best.
Check with Crutchfield.com. They can provide step by step diagrams of how to install your new stereo.

Crutchfield sells a kit that allows you to install a single din aftermarket stereo where the pocket under the A/C controls are located.
The best thing to do is to buy a wiring harness for your car and new stereo. These are readily available on eBay from $15. Just search for 'stereo wiring harness'.
To install an aftermarket stereo in a 2003 Montana you need to first buy a trim plate or a mounting bracket. Remove the dash panel. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery. Remove the factory stereo. Unplug the factory wiring harness from the radio. Connect the new radio. Test it and reassemble the dash. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

To remove the old radio you will have to first remove the radio bezel/trim. This is accomplished with a plastic pry tool and some gentle persuasion. Once out, you will see 4 screws securing the radio to the "chassis" as Subaru calls it. I recommend getting a "plug and play" harness from a stereo shop to simplify the install. (assuming you are replacing with an aftermarket unit! All in all, about 10-15 mintues of your time.
