How do you change the oil on a 1997 Toyota Camry?

Allow the vehicle to cool.Engage parking brake and place wheel chocks behind rear wheels.Raise front of vehicle.Place jack stand under vehicle.Lower vehicle until jack stands are supporting vehicle.MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS SAFE TO GO UNDERNEATH.Place a oil drain pan under the oil pan.Use a 6 point 14mm wrench or socket to remove the oil pan drain bolt.Turn bolt to left until bolt is loose.Remove bolt,allow oil to drain.Check drain plug threads and gasket.Clean drain plug and area where drain plug screws into pan with a clean shop towel.Screw drain plug into pan and tighten bolt with wrench or socket.Get it tight,but do not over tighten.Open your hood.Locate your oil filter,sholud be on the front side of your engine,directly in the middle.Place you oil drain pan directly below your filter.Remove filter with a small oil filter wrench.Examine the area where the old oil filter was mounted.MAKE SURE THERE IS NOT AN OLD 'O' RING LEFT ON THE OIL FILTER MOUNTING SURFACE.Clean mounting surface.Open a bottle of oil,pour a drop of oil on your finger.Rub the oil on the 'o' ring of the new oil filter.Screw oil filter on mounting area.Tighten oil filter by hand.GET IT TIGHT.Remove oil filler cap,pour in 4 quarts of 5w 30 oil.Start vehicle,oil light should go out within 5 seconds.Look under vehicle,inspect oil drain plug for leaks.Check oil filter area for leaks.Listen for rattling and knocking.Lift vevicle,remove jack stands and wheel chocks.While under the hood check power steering,brake,windshield wiper and Transmission Fluid.Inspect your air filter and check air in your tires(30-32psi).Take your used oil to a qiuck lube shop(Jiffy Lube).A lot of words,simple to do.Take your time.

I agree. The 1997-2001 Camry's are the EASIEST cars to change oil I've ever seen. I was highly disappointed with the new Camry's oil location. However, the new-style Lexus ES300 oil filter location is in a similar location as the 97 Camry (just under the manifold) and provides easy access without having to put the car up on ramps.
