You have to remove the console portion around the shifter which is not as har as it sounds. 1. Lift up and remove the felt piece from the bottom part of center console box 2. Remove two hex head screws from there with a socket wrench 3. The console box storage box will now wriggle a little if you need it for the next step. 4. Gently pull back on the wood grain part of the center console (pulling it back towards the back seat), it will snap out of its holders and you can twist it around as needed. 5. Remove the three electrical plugs going into the bottom of the woodgrain part of the console (snow traction button, Seat Heater buttons, and shift boosting button for faster starts- whatever it's called) 6. Unscrew shift knob 7. Remove woodgrain console center portion, set it aside 8. The gear shifter itself is in a plastic box. Now, gently pry open the top to that by lifting up on the two tabs on the drivers side. 9. Voila, you can see the bulb now - remove it. 10. Save the rubber green sleeve covering the bulb 11. Replace with sylvania 2127 or equivalent bulb (it's a common one - easy to find at any auto parts store) 12. Put the little rubber sleeve on the bulb before installing 13. Put it all back together.

(I assume you mean the floor shifter lights, not the dash shift position indicator lights.)

I'm assuming that the vehicle is equipped with a push button shifter for the 4 wheel drive and the light doesn't light on the switch? If so, about 90% of the time it's the switch group itself. If the light were to come on and then blink (indicating that the front dirrerential isn't engaging) the you start looking farther forward. If yours has the floor shifter, there are actually bulbs under the graphic to the left of the shifter. The shifter cover will come up and you can replace bulbs as needed from there.
