I have the 1.8 version and have changed the timing belt a few times. There is no shortcuts, you need to remove the alternater and Power Steering pump belts first, then the crankshaft bolt on the bottom pulley and remove the pulley. All this just to get the plastice belt guard off. The belt guard is in two pieces, you can remove the upper half to access the condition of the belt only.
