An air conditioning belt on a 2000 Honda Civic is adjusted with a pulley. The loosen the adjustment pulley to create enough and pull the belt off. Remove the torque mount bolts to allow enough room to slip out the old belt and install the new belt.
Taking off an alternator on a 1997 Honda Civic requires removal of the old belt. Loosen the belt pulley and pull it off when there is enough slack. Loosen the bracket bolts on the alternator. Be sure to unplug all electrical components and remove the alternator.

The adjusting pulley for the power steering is found on the side of the engine under the power steering pump. Loosen the bolt that keeps it tight and the belt will have some slack to slide off the pulley.
