Rugs come in all shapes, sizes and colors. The right rug can bring beauty, vibrancy and a completely new look to any room of your home. However, rugs will get dirty from people walking on them. There are a few techniques that you can try to clean your rugs without sending them to a cleaner.

The first thing you need to do is pick up the rug you are cleaning and shake any dirt out of it that you can. Shaking the dirt outside is easiest. Use a vacuum cleaner to go over the rug. If the rug is small, you can vacuum both sides of it. Since you probably won't be able to shake a larger rug, you need to make sure you go over it very well with a vacuum cleaner before you start cleaning it. If there is a smaller rug on top of carpet in the home, this would be a great time to clean the carpet with the vacuum.

After you have vacuumed your rug, you want to use a pair of gloves and a cleaner to spray the rug and scrub it. First, you can use a lint brush and go over the entire rug to get off any animal hairs or lint that is on the rug. Start in one corner and work your way around the entire rug until the lint brush is full. You can change the cover on the brush or you can begin using the cleaner on the rug.

You can use any kind of rug cleaner, or you can mix water in a spray bottle with a small amount of carpet cleaner if you want your product to last longer. Spray the carpet until it is damp. Using a dry cloth, scrub the carpet in small areas at a time. You can also use a spoon and press it over the cloth to soak up the water and any dirt that is on the rug. Another easy way to clean small rugs is by putting them in the washing machine. Make sure you can place them in the washing machine by looking at the tag on the rug.
