If the engine starts to slow down and then stops all together, it is most likely "Seizing" up. The best way to check if this is the case is to try to start it when it has just stopped. If it will not crank or you can not pull the start rope it is because the clearance between the piston and the cylinder is too close. This is normally caused by the engine running out of oil at sometime in the past or the cooling of the engine has been interupted by grass plugging the passages, the engine has over heated and the friction between the piston and the cylinder has caused metal on the piston and the cylinder to expand and transfer and bind the parts.

If you can't pull it over and it is "frozen" and will not rotate it is cheeper to just buy a new engine in the long run.

If it will pull over and doesn't run look for loose carburetor on the flange that bolts to the engine block or low compression as the reason. Cheers

AnswerIf it is a two stroke engine try using a little more oil in the fuel mixture

If it just shuts down after getting hot, it could be a bad coil.

White smoke coming from air filter when cranking engine on riding lawn mower?

I am assuming that the mower doesn't start.... My first guess would be that you are not getting spark to ignite the gas in the engine. Check to see if you have spark at the spark plug.
