The wider the screwdriver, the better. Longer handle will give a fling affect possibly resulting in thrown paint splatter.
ANS 2 - Why not do the sensible thing and just get a paint can opening handle, available for less than a dollar at every paint store and hardware store.

Try removing it with your nail and use your thumbs for leverage. Or, you can try prying it open with a precision (or a jeweler's-type) flathead screwdriver. Once you are able to pry enough of it away from the rest of the casing, you should be able to open up the sides and remove the cover.
