I would think in the early days, people didn't have the stores with the selections that we enjoy today so they had to be handy enough to make things themselfs, some became good enough to start companys. Henry Ford for-one, Edison, Franklin, etc. Today we have Lathes to turn wood, (bowls-vases-spindles and such) in days of old you would gouge out a piece of wood with a sharp rock to make a bowl, crafters made a lathe with 2 centers, a rope and a stick they would pump with the're leg,(similar to the old treadle sewing machine) So "Handicraft" comes from using your hands and mind to build or put together something you or someone needs.
