The current skinny jeans wasn't invented by anyone. Jeans were invented by Levi Strauss in the 1800's and by the late 1800's he made several cuts, from slim fit to roomy. The style of the past year or so know as skinnies is just the latest name for what's know as the slim fit jeans. Slim fits were reintroduced by Levi's in the 1950's. They gained popularity when they were worn in counterculture movies such as The Wild One, Rebel Without a Cause and On the Waterfront by the big teenage stars of the day such as James Dean and Marlon Brando. They were also popular with the "beatnik" generation. They faded in the mid sixties when boot cuts and flares became popular. In the eighties the slim fit came back as part of the punk rock movement, and that faded when the 90's rolled in. The current slim cut jeans craze came about as a reaction against baggy oversized jeans and it was the teens who wore them named them "skinnies" Like most fads, this too will fade in a year or so but there will be people who still where them.
