Purpose: You should change the needle depending on the project/fabric you are sewing. For example, sewing with silk requires very small needles (such as 60/8), but sewing with denim requires much heavier needles 110/18). See the needle chart in "Related Links" for more information.
Wear and tear: A sewing needle should be replaced any time it bends or breaks. If this hasn't occured, you sew often, and you haven't changed the needle, perhaps it's good to change the needle once a year or so (since it may dull with frequent use).
well it depends on what sort of sewing machine it is it should say on the packaging of the sewing machine.
As you are sitting looking at the sewing machine as though you were going to use it, the hole should face you, i.e. you should be able to see through it.
you shouldn't put your finger underneath the needle when its going up and down.
To make sure it does not slip out of the way
I HAVE A JONES VX890 SEWING MACHINE. CAN YOU TELL ME WHA SETTING THE TENSION KNOB ABOVE THE NEEDLE SHOULD BE AT AND WHAT NUMBER THE KNOB ON THE RIGHT SHOULD BE. I ONLY WANT TO DO STRAIGHT STITCHING NO FANCIES.

An electric sewing machine requires good eye and hand coordination. The speed of the machine is controlled by a food pedal. The user of the machine must be tall enough to sit comfortably in front of the machine and have their feet on the ground to control the foot pedal. By approximately fourth or fifth grade, most children have the physical coordination to use a sewing machine, and are old enough to recognize that the sharp needle can harm them if their hands or fingers get too close to the needle. Children should use an electric sewing machine only while being supervised by an adult. A number of sewing machine manufacturers have designed sewing machines for very young children. Some of these are powered by a hand crank and some are electric. The manufacturers print the recommended age for users of the machine on the front of the machine's packaging.
It should be!
There are some safety features on sewing machines. For example, some stop working if the presser foot is not down or the electrical is not hooked up correctly. You should take precautions yourself, such as never leaving the machine on around children and keeping your hands away from the needle.
The "Unique" brand sewing machine was built by the Davis sewing machine company. If you have the bobbin, you should see Davis stamped on it in small letters.
How to thread a sewing machinePlace the presser foot in the upward position.Place a spool of thread on the spool holder.Traveling from the spool holder, across the top of the machine, look for a minimum of one thread guide.Insert the thread in the thread guide(s).Now look for a tension mechanism. Bring the thread downward to the tension mechanism, slip the thread between the metal disks of the tension mechanism, and travel back upwards with the thread.Look for a take up mechanism. This is the area on the front of the machine which will go up and down, when you turn the hand wheel. Place the thread through the take up lever. Some machines are set up so the thread will slide in to this, others require you to place the thread through a hole. Now the thread will go downward on the left side of the take up lever.Locate and thread any thread guides, leading down to the sewing machine needle.Thread the sewing machine needle. Hold the thread with your left hand and turn the hand wheel.
Updating this because the last answer was just a spam of letters. You should buy a sewing machine because even though it costes money to make something in a sewing machine you can have your own costum designs and may be able to put it up for sale being it made by you. If you get a sewing machine you can make warm coats and scarfs and they can be warm depending on how warm what its made out of is.
