I don't see why you couldn't, it may be hard to get to stay on the cardboard, but it just might work.
Well, there are 2 types that you can recycle. flat cardboard and corrugated cardboard.
Into CARDBOARD? How thick of cardboard are you working with? Any decent sign shop can contour cut something like shirt cardboard, but corrugated is a different story. I would think hard about not using cardboard, though; there are cuttable plastics that will do a better job for you and not get frayed around the edges.
