I should start by saying that i do not tie this know at the neck rather down a bit at chest level where i can see it without a mirror, hence my preference for a very short thin-end starting point. I just found it easier when i began and now its a habit. OK. Start with a small tail-end made of the thin-end of your chosen tie and begin by wrapping the fat-end around it clockwise, but before you go all the way around bring it up and through the V formed at the neck. Pull the fat-end all the way through and wrap it around the right-hand part of the V formed at the neck, again in a clockwise direction, but this time go all the way around to the 'front' i.e. the starting position. Now, from the front, feed the fat end down through the V formed at the neck and wrap it around the left-hand part of the V formed at the neck and bring back to the front. You should now have a short stubby tail of the thin end and each of the sides of the V formed at the neck should have had the fat end wrapped around it once. At this point take a look at the wrapping and eliminate any folds or kinks as these will impair the tightening of the knot later. To finish the knot; bring the fat end around to the back of your concoction and feed up through the V formed at the neck with the intent to thread it through the loop now formed at the front. Here i tend to gently pull the whole way through and re-check for folds etc before taking the fat end down through the loop and preparing to tighten. It has to be said that you have done 90% of the work for no result whatever so far and it can all go wrong now because tightening up the knot is tricky and getting a result that you are happy with will only come with practice. So ... tighten-up from above and below the knot a little bit at a time checking and re-checking the fit of the relevant parts of the knot; simply pulling on the fat end will not achieve any kind of result; keep going until such time as it is tight enough to form a distinct V shape and will sit correctly when tightened-up to the collar after pulling the thin end downward as normal. Congratulations! you have just tied my version of 'The Windsor Knot' popularised by the then Prince of Wales who went on to be King Edward VIII of Great Britain albeit not for very long! Check out You Tube for videos of how to tie a tie properly; yes, there are several and some of the bow-tie tying efforts are hilarious.
