You should respond to a complaint about duty of care by taking it seriously. Speak with all parties involved and do whatever you must do to get to the bottom of things and rectify the situation.
That is an ethics question. To me it depends how the dog behaved. If it was misbehaving and does not respond to your commands, it was not selfish. He/she could get an owner who knows how to take care of the dog. If your dog was well behaved, Ithink you were selfish.
