In 100 BC, Marius was a general in the Roman army, followed by Sulla and Pompey. In the 70's BC, Crassus saved Italy from Spartacus and in the 50's Julius Caesar made his mark in Gaul and he remained the major Roman general until his death in 44 BC. There were other generals, but the above were the major ones.
