In Microsoft Word, at the top there is a bar where you can change font. Near the bar there is a button with a slanted 'I', looking like this: I. Highlight the text you wish to make italic and click the button.

You mean Italic? That won't work unless the program or site you're using to type allows Italic, in which case it would usually be a slanted I.
