The best way to get the Transmission Fluid smell out of your clothes is to wash them in something that cuts through grease. Many mechanics use Oxy-clean to remove these types of stains.
Pull the transmission dipstick, smell the fluid and notice the color. If the fluid is brown and smells burnt, it needs changing.

Typically, it'll be black or something close to it once its burned. It always appears brownish to me and has a very bad smell. The smell more than anything let's you know the transmission have overheated and the fluid has been burnt.

never seen soot in transmission fluid? does it smell burnt? maybe be carbonized transmission fluid, or metal from transmission and cltuch wear. I would change the fluid clean out the pan real good install a new filter as weel. Also put a magnet in the pan if there isn't already one
It should look reddish in color for an automatic with no burnt smell.

It is probably too late at this point, but it may just have been low on transmission fluid. The burned rubber smell is the bands in the transmission slipping because they are either worn out or very low on fluid. Check the fluid level and add if needed. It may not help, but you will only waste $10 adding fluid.
