Are you sure you want to try this yourself? You will need jeweler's pliers and a slip ring. A local hobby shop can supply these items for under 10 dollars.

Look carefully at the end of the necklace. There should be a tiny silver or gold piece of metal on the end at the bead or gem. With your pliers, carefully squeeze this piece in the opposite direction that it is flattened. This will remove the slip ring that was in place.

Now if there is enough string left on the necklace, do this. First put the new slip ring on the string then run the string through the hole in the clasp. Now put the end of the string into the slip ring...you have the ring on the string and the end pushed through it too. Carefully flatten the ring with the pliers until the slip ring is as flat as possible. This will hold your clasp on the necklace securely.

If this is not feasible and your necklace is valuable, see a jewelry repair person. The fee is reasonable to have the clasp replaced.
