The amount of fabric that you need depends on the project. Your pattern should specify yardage right on the back of it, where it lists supplies. However, if the measurements are not in yards, check out the link included with this answer. Scroll down to length converter and enter the amount of whatever fabric you need in the quantity box. From there, click on the measurement you are starting with in the "From" column and click on yards in the "To" column. After clicking "Go", the site will bring you back to the top, where it will say Result:, followed by the conversions. Hope this helps! Let me know if you'd like more information!

Best practicesdictatethat you knit a sample gauge, then determine the measurements for the finished project that you want.

Often a yarn wrapper willestimatea gauge for you, with needle size included.

Another option is to find a pattern made in a similar style and guestimate using the yarn requirements for that pattern.

If the pattern is a simple repeat, you could work one row (or one square) and multiply it out, adding for the edging and, if squares, assembly.

When in doubt, I like to get an extra skein or two in the same dye lot as sometimes dye lot will make a difference in a project. You can never have too much yarn and some places will let you return full, unused skeins.

First of all, a piece of fabric has 4 sides: 2 raw edges & 2 selvage edges. The selvage edges are the edges of the width of the fabric when the fabric was created. The raw edges are the edges that are cut. A length of fabric that is 1 yard is measured from raw edge to raw edge. So, for example, if your fabric is 45" wide and you need 1 yard, your fabric would measure 45" wide (selvage edge to selvage edge) by 36" long (raw edge to raw edge) when laid out flat.

How to Make Your Own Bed Skirt?

A bed skirt, sometimes known as a dust ruffle, is a decorative item for the bedroom that is placed between the box spring and the mattress. A bed skirt is a good way to keep things stored under the bed hidden, and the population of dust bunnies hidden from view. Follow these steps, and you will learn how to make your own bed skirt from an old, flat sheet and some fabric. Step 1: You will need to have the following items. • Flat sheet (An old one that is no longer in use will work just fine.) • Fabric for the skirting (Select fabric that will match your bedroom decor.) • Sew machine • Fabric measuring tape • Chalk • Sewing pins • Scissors Step 2: Strip all the bedding from the bed. Step 3: Remove the mattress and lean it against the wall and out of your way. Step 4: Place the flat sheet over the box spring. The top of the sheet should be even with the top of the box spring. Step 5: Using the sewing pins, tack the flat sheet onto the box spring to keep it in place. Step 6: With the chalk, trace the outline of the box spring. Step 7: Cut along your chalk line with your scissors. Step 8: When you are done cutting, you should have a flat sheet that is the same measurement as the outline of your box spring. Step 9: Next, you will need to take measurements for the length of fabric needed to make the skirting. • Measure from the head of the bed to the foot of the bed. Multiply this measurement by two. This will be the measurement for the sides of the bed. • Measure the box spring from left to right. This will give you the measurement for the skirting that goes along the foot of the bed. Step 10: Now that you have the length of fabric needed for the skirting, you will now need the width measurements. • Measure from the top of the box spring to the floor. Add 2” to the measurement for the hem. Step 11: After you have made your measurements, cut your fabric out in three different pieces to make it easier to work with. Step 12: Sew a 1” hem on both sides of each piece of fabric. Step 13: Sew each piece of the skirting fabric onto the flat sheet. You may sew the foot skirting to both side skirtings. If your bed has bed posts, it is recommended to not sew the foot skirting to the side skirtings. Step 14: Once you have completed sewing the skirting to the fabric, lay your bed skirt on the box spring, place the mattress back onto the bed and remake the bed. You have completed making your own bed skirt for your bed. Other options can be included, such as sewing velvet onto the flat sheet to keep it from sliding, adding pockets to the skirting on the bed or even adding pleats. Depending how creative you want to get, you can even make themes out of your bed skirting for holidays, your children's rooms or whatever else you like.
