Humans and other animals have a protein called haemoglobin in our blood. It is used to carry oxygen from our lungs, to the all the tissues in the body, including the heart and brain.

When haemoglobin is attached to oxygen, it is red in colour. Otherwise, it is blue.

Arteries carry blood full of oxygen from our heart around our body, so the blood carried through arteries is bright red.

Veins carry blood back to our heart and lungs, once the oxygen in it has been used up by the tissues. Because there is less haemoglobin attached to oxygen in the veins, they have a bluish tinge.

Arteries and viens have different colors for a very interesting reason. Viens are blue because they are caring blood to the lungs for more oxygen. Arteries are red because they are carring blood with oxygen to parts of the body that need it.
