A Wrinkle in Time is a book that revolves around a young girl whose father has gone missing after working on a mysterious project called a tesseract. The life of the young girl, Meg Murry, has gone into a turmoil since her father's disappearance. The journey to find her father starts when a mysterious Mrs Whatsit stumbles upon her house. Along with Charles, her baby brother and Calvin, a schoolmate, they set off on an adventure to find and save Mr Murry. They travel into a few planets and meet some extraterrestrial life. They finally manage to find and save their father from the clutches of IT and the Murry family is united once again,.
Because when they travel via tesseract they are using the fifth dimension which is a wrinkle which lets them travel long distances in a very short time. This basically creates a wrinkle in time hence the title. At the end of the book, the Mrs. Ws create a time wrinkle to cover up the fact that they were gone for many days.
A Wrinkle in Time has been popular and remains popular because of its characters, supernatural elements, and timeless values. The heroine, Meg, is an average girl with no special features, talents, or abilities; however, she truly loves her family. Most of the other human characters are similarly unassuming, and the main gifted one--Meg's brother--is possessed by evil mainly because of his gifted sensativities. The good supernatural characters are likewise simply, direct, and devoted to doing what is right. Meanwhile, the evil force in the book is delightfully sleazy and obviously malevolent. In order to battle the evil force, the children--Meg particularly--have to put themselves at extreme risk just to travel to the world of the evil force. In the end, true love is the answer to what overcomes evil.
I first read the book in fifth grade. I have had the pleasure of introducing my children to the book and reading it to some of my past fifth grade classes.
A "Wrinkle in Time" is sometimes used to describe the variation in the Cosmic Background Radiation. Some theories predict a uniform shape to this radiation but most recent studies show a tiny variation. In essence this demonstrates a non-uniform, or wrinkled, shape from which clumps of matter and then galaxies may have formed. In this sense it is not Science Fiction but an observable feature.
