in different parts of Earth's interrior, there are solid and liquid layers. Why is this? scientists believe that as you travel further through Earth's core, the temperature increases as well as pressure. The mantle, the closest layer to the crust, is solid due to its temperature. However, the outer core is made up of liquid because of its temperature as well, but the inner core isn't. It may be the hottest part of Earth, but it's under so much pressure that it remains a solid state.

Actually, only one segment of inner earth is theorized to be liquid. This segment is known as the outer core. Scientists suspect that the outer core is liquid because of its interaction with seismic waves. A type of seismic wave known as an "S" wave or Shear wave moves side-to-side in a shearing motion and does not propagate through liquid only through solid. "S" waves are often blocked or reflected by the inner core and it is therefore thought to be liquid.

Because it is hot enough due to left over raditation from the formation of the earth and it is not under to enough pressure to be solid. The inner core however is even hotter but is under to much pressure to become molten rock.

earthquakes have p-waves and s-waves. p-waves can travel through liquid and solid but s-waves can only travel through solid material and will be refracted if it comes into contact with liquid material. when measuring the waves of an earthquake, the s-wave is shown to refract when it reaches the mantle-outer core boundary but the p-wave doesn't so the outer core must be liquid.

We know that it is liquid looks like because of waves like P and S. They come from earthquakes. S waves won't travel through liquids so that helps us determine it is a liquid layer.

The inner core of the Earth is mostly a solid ball of iron causing magnetic poles. The pressure is so great that it iron can't melt.
