Many of the Pony Express horses may have been the precursor to the Quarter Horse but at the time Quarter Horses as a breed did not exist. But many of the horses were of a stock type that was popular for cattle work with cow hands. They were sturdy, athletic and surefooted for travel over rough terrain.
Well Quarter horses can be a good first choice but so can many other breeds including Paints, Appaloosas, Pony breeds, draft crosses, and Standardbreds.
A Hand when referring the the height of horses is 4 inches, so a 15 hand horse is 60 inches or 5 feet tall at the withers. 4 inches is 10.16 centimeters. You measure from the ground to the point of the horse or pony's withers. (The point of the withers is commonly defined as the last hair on the neck at the shoulders) There is a unit called hands which is especially for measuring horses. Each hand is 4 inches.
This may not be completely accurate, but I imagine that the Quarter Horse is specialized breeding from a strain of especially fast Mustangs. They have a stocky build, so I would think that some sort of a pony breed would be in there, and maybe a touch of Arabian, to put the height and speed, and maybe the endurance cattle workers need when they are herding cattle for long periods of time in the heat. But, if I am wrong, please do not be angry. I do Thoroughbreds and Arabians usually. ; )
Well know one can really how tall they are cause they can get short or tallness from their parents or relatives so you wouldn't know because the horse could be short or tall originating on it family members and relatives. quarter horses also vary in size from 14 to sixteen hands on the average like i said they can be any height just not as small as like a pony or anything
Yes there is. A pony is shorter than a horse and is somtimes mistaken for a child horse. That and MANY other reasons is why there is no difference between a quarter horse and a quarter pony. Look it up. It's not rocket science.

The riders for the pony express had to know how to ride REALLY Good. They would ride at day at night and have to watch out for dangers. Most old ads said they were looking for wiry fellows who were younger maybe in their older teen ages. the government prefered orphans, so if the riders got hurt, they wouldn't be "missed"
