I would tend to explore the idea that King Arthur was too proud to admit he had any fault in the matters, and that he could not let the other knights or his subjects see that he was fallible. Also, Lancelot broke the rules, and Arthur needed to be sure not to play favorites so people would question his authority. Those are just a couple of ideas for starters, I'm sure others will have their own ideas to share.
