John Van Buren February 18, 1810 - October 13, 1866) lawyer and politician , married Elizabeth Vanderpoel in 1845- one daughter

Martin Van Buren Jr. (Dec. 20, 1812- Mar. 19, 1845) died in France

Smith Thompson Van Buren (Jan 16,1817- 1876) married Ellen King.

His family was far from wealthy . They spoke Dutch at home and practiced old world customs. His father ran a tavern and Martin enjoyed listening to the political arguments that occurred. Like his father, he did not get into the arguments himself but soon became an ardent supporter of Jefferson and the Republicans. His father also grew produce and Martin helped deliver it after school. His schooling ended before he was 14 and he worked at a law office and studied law as a perk.
