Jan Vermeer - Dutch, 1632 - 1675 . Also called Johannes, Johan, and Johannis
Her name was Digna Baltens.
Johannes (Jan) Vermeer (1632-1675) is a Dutchman best known for his paintings, of which only 35 or 36 are known to exist. For an artist with such modest output in such a short career, it is phenomenal how many subsequent artists he influenced; these include Gustave Courbet, van Gogh, Seurat, Edward Hopper, Salvador Dali and even Damien Hirst.
It seems they did not. Vermeer lived in Delft all his life, and was only known locally. Rembrandt lived in Leiden and Amsterdam. With the communications of today it is probable they would have known each other.
Ten names are known: Maria, Elisabeth, Cornelia, Aleydis, Beatrix, Johannes, Gertruyd, Franciscus, Catharina, and Ignatius. Vermeer actually had 14 children, but 4 of them died before being baptised.
