In 1836, the opposition to Van Buren was disorganized and decided to run different candidates in different parts of country in hopes that no one would get a majority and the House would decide the election from the top three candidates. The opposition candidates who called themselves Whigs, were William Henry Harrison, Daniel Webster, Hugh Lawson White and William Person Mangum. The all carried at least one state, but Van Buren still received a substantial majority of the electoral vote.
