Laying down is best. Before any type of physical activity. It can be done multiple ways as far as time goes. For beats per minute (bpm) 30x2 or 15x4 is the most common. The more time used i.e 30x2 the more accurate the reading. Also a form of distraction can help as some may be nervous or try to control breathing to lower their HR.
