Martin Van Buren failed to win the Democratic party nomination in 1944 mainly due to his refusal to support the annexation of Texas as a slave state. He was nominated by the anti-slavery Free Soil Party in 1948. The Free Soil Party was made up of antislavery democrats who were called "Barnburners".

Van Buren did not exactly split with the Democrats, but in 1848 he was offered the nomination of the Free Soil Party which he accepted, so at thaat point, he split with the Democrats and in effect cost them the election.
