André Breton started Surrealism in 1924 with his 'Manifesto du Surréalisme'. It was the Surreal the artists were looking for to express, and founded this mainly in the Subconscious, discovered by Freud. Surrealism is an art movement in which one's dreams, nightmares, subconsciousness and fantasy inspire the final works.

The surrealist movement was a movement of art that was characterized by the random, the unexpected, and comparisons between subjects that would not normally be compared. However, within the movement itself, the artists considered their works to be representations of philosophical subjects, rather than meaningless nonsensical garbage.

French poet Andre Breton wrote the 'Manifesto of Surrealism' in 1924. The term 'surrealism' was coined by the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire in 1917 to refer to his drama 'Les Mamelles de Tiresias' and Pablo Picasso's set designs for a Ballet 'Parade'. There are two distinct styles of Surrealism. One is the precise realistic style Salvador Dali used in his bizarre 'dreamscapes'. Another style is that of Joan Miro and Andre Masson. Very abstract and lyrical imagery, loosely drawn forms exist in shallow space. The rise of Hitler in 1930 sent many artists to America where they became role models for artists like Arshile Gorky, considered to be the last of the Surrealists.
