Jacques Cartier made three trips to the "New World." The first was in 1534 when he explored the Gulf Of St Lawrence.

Cartier explored the St Lawrence River during his second voyage, 1535-1536. On this trip, as well as the 1541-1542 trip, Cartier wintered near present-day Québec City.

Canadian archaeologists recently confirmed the location of Cartier's "Charlesbourg-Royal" as being at Cap Rouge, Québec. There, 400 people survived the winter despite the cold weather and Indian attacks

1535-1542 are the years he explored. He explored because King Francis the I or II told him to find land with precious stuff.
