He was chronically depressed throughout his entire life, suffered from bouts of anxiety and low self-esteem, was rather arrogant as a youth, but was also a visionary who had a fantastically adept grip on light and movement, as well as a romantic in love with nature, his wife (Camille Doncieux, his first wife, died nine years after they were wed, and much later he married Alice Hoschedé who also died after 19 years of marriage). He often destroyed his paintings (it is supposed up to 500) due to aforesaid anxiety and low self-esteem, but also spent a lot of time around flowers in his often massive garden(s) and would often paint the same subject multiple times at different times during the day to capture the way the light looked.
