The normal resting heart rate should be at around 70 beats per minute give or take 5 beats, it's not exact and we are all individuals. Some folks have a slower rate, 60 beats per minute or less, usually the lean athletic types.

Some foods can cause a raised heart rate, particularly chocolate. It can even cause palpitations, where the heart beat may be felt in the chest for a beat or two intermittently.

The heart rate can be affected by a large meal eaten too recently before going to bed. If you then lay on the left side, the full stomach can very gently lay on the heart causing the heart to "complain" and increase its rate or palpitate. Turning to the other side will stop this.

Smoking will cause an increased rate as will illicit drug taking.

Tea and coffee both contain caffein which will step up the rate.

When you wake in the morning, before you move, take the pulse and see what it is at your most natural state. You will be entirely rested and you should be unaffected by food/drink.

If however you experience unusual symptoms like palpitations or periods of rapid pulse rates where you feel pain or dizzyness or are light headed then you should visit your doctor or if you feel awful, call an ambulance.
