I will take your question as: How do I personally use drawing.

For me drawing is an extension of how I communicate. I have carried a sketch book and pencils with me most of the time for the last 55 years of my life.

When I see something that catches my eye, I usually try to get it down on paper as fast as I can.

Sketching in real life teaches you to look closely, quickly and grasp the general "look" of a thing.

For people in motion, a fast gestural drawing is what I tend to use most often. If you only have a few moments to capture the feeling of the person, you pare the sketch down to one or two very expressive lines.

When I have time, like in a doctor's waiting room, on a bus, or in an airport, I can use softer pencils, stubs and blend shadows and contours into more elaborate drawings. I even sometimes have time and opportunity to use colours, which is why I'm so glad someone invented water-colour pencils.

Frequently when talking with friends or clients, I pull out a large piece of sketch paper and draw while we talk.

It helps me to visualize what we are trying to communicate to one another, and helps my clients to see where I am going with their ideas.

It also allows them to have input on changes or clarification of their concept at the beginning of the process as opposed to later down the road when the concept will need bigger changes.

When I write letters to friends and family I frequently draw on the pages to illustrate the story I am telling or to share a joke, or pass on information.

My other way of using drawing is in my personal diary.

From the time I was very young my diary has been in the form of drawings. That old adage about a picture being worth a thousand words is so very true. I can capture a moment or memory in a small thumbnail sketch, and more importantly, I can pick up old journals and at the sight of one of my old drawings be instantly back to the time, the place, the emotion, of the instant I put the original sketch on the paper.

Drawing to me is communication, and I use it all the time.
