the Earth's surface. If you also have a number that tells its east/west position ...

such as for example the number called 'longitude' ... then the location of the place

is precisely defined.

"Lines" of latitude are a convenience, often printed on a map or globe and often

not. Like the marks on a ruler, they have no real significance and no effect on the

latitude itself.
